untry. On the 26th of December our party separated oncemore. The Duke, Professor Haberer, Heims, andSchmidt, accompanied by First Lieutenant von Rabenand Dr Trepper, set out from Kusseri on a four weekstour in the Logone district. We said good-bye, shak-ing hands warmly, for we were not to meet again untilwe reached Europe at the close of the expedition,i.e. in about ten months time. And although I felthonoured at being entrusted with the task of pushingon eastwards to the Nile, it was hard to part with theDuke, whose companion I had always been till nowin his African travels. Roder and I returned to Fort Lamy, and thereawaited the steamer which was to convey us to Arch-ambault. Monsieur Ruet was also of the party, havingkindly acted as guide to the Duke as far as Lamy, andbeing now on his way back to Bangi, and thence hometo France. At Fort Lamy I had the pleasure of making theacquaintance of a merry, fair-haired, little Englishgirl, who had come here as the result of a great sorrow,
