c 3(/) 3 X>00O FROM THE UBANGI TO LAKE TCHAD 45 Although our stay among the Niellims was full ofinterest, we soon became anxious to move on. Therocks reflected an intolerable heat; the atmospherewas like that of a Turkish bath, the thermometeroften registering a temperature of 94° F. even at fiveoclock on a cloudy afternoon, whilst at night it neverfell below 76° F. This is not surprising, consideringthat we were in about lat. 10° N., and it is well knownthat it is much hotter there than nearer the Equator. The time of year was still unfavourable for obtain-ing zoological specimens, though at night we couldhear lions roaring, and the tracks of many water-bucks and antelopes were visible by day. Weanxiously awaited the arrival of a steamer from Arch-ambault, and great was our disappointment whentwo vessels passed by without stopping or taking theslightest notice of our frantic signals.
