| Description |
English: From Spit Sand Fort Four forts were built in the Eastern approaches to the Solent in the 1860s and 1870s. Horse Sand and No Mans Forts, seen here in the middle distance, were the biggest and were placed either side of the main channel. St. Helens Fort complemented them at the eastern end of the Isle of Wight, whilst Spit Sand Fort on which we are standing protected the deep water channel into Portsmouth. A fifth was planned, on Ryde East Sands, but the seabed was not found to be suitable. Indeed, even St. Helens was built smaller than planned as it started to sink.
By the time the forts were completed in 1878 the threat from the French had passed; indeed Napoleon III was even exiled in England. They formed a strategic role in both WW1 and WW2, but as far as is known no shot was ever fired in anger from any of them. They were decommissioned by the army (yes they were army not navy) in 1962, and today are all in private ownership. |
