KALGAN, OH CHANG-OHIA-KOW. 185 wliicli was perhaps lucky, as the stiff work in themarshes had almost done up our camels. I had yetto learn that the more beat these animals look, thefitter they are. We now passed through a sterile, burnt-up-lookingcountry, thickly covered with clumps of thick,wiry grass, over which the camel carts plungedand rolled in a very painful manner. I retired tomy cart about five oclock for a rest, and, tired outwith my long ride in the sun, fell asleep. Thesun was low in the heavens when I awokeand looked out of the little window. All traces ofvegetation had vanished, while straight in front ofus rose a low range of yellow sand-hills, throughwhich stunted wisps of light green grass struggledat intervals.
