Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fritz Chapel – Matthias and Maria (Forret) Fritz lived on the border between Luxemberg and France. They came to Jackson County, Iowa, in 1852 after an arduous trip of about 50 days. While the rough Atlantic crossing, Matthias, a devout Catholic and a skilled stone mason, vowed to God that if He granted them safe passage across the ocean then he, Matthias, would show his gratitude by building a chapel at his new home, that would endure as long as stone. After settling on their new farm, Matthias kept his promise to God and erected a small chapel from native limestone and red sand mortar. The chapel features a massive walnut archway, which Matthias sawed from a single piece of wood. He also carved the figure of the Corpus, or crucifixion, which is still in place and in good condition today.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 91001067..
