Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fresco depicting the meeting of the cyclops (with two eyes here!) Polyphemus and the nereid Galatea. He becomes helplessly besotted by her, but never catches her interest. The hopeless love was portrayed in several different types of media throughout the Roman empire.

Polyphemus grew enraged when Galatea fell in love with a human man, Acis, and killed him with a boulder. Galatea turned the dead Acis into an immortal river god; that river on the flanks of Mt. Etna in Sicily still bears his name.

Chillingly, the small green monochrome picture in the background portrays a scene of the blinding of the Cyclops.
