A somewhat enigmatic fresco depicting Hercules discovering his infant son in Arcadia, standing in front of an unnamed deity

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This large - and somewhat enigmatic - wall fresco from the basilica at Herculaneum depicts Hercules finding his son Telephus in the mountains of Arcadia. A naked Hercules - his highlighted buttocks turned slightly towards the viewer - watches his infant son suckle from a doe, next to an eagle (symbol of Zeus and Rome). Hercules carries a bow and quiver under his arm, standing in front of a larger than life god or goddess, seated on a rocky outcropping. This deity appears to wear a woman’s tunic, with an apricot colored cloak over both shoulders; additionally, he or she holds onto a staff made of plant matter - a thyrsus? He, because I think it’s Dionysus, is wreathed, and has a basket of fruit (notably with lots of grapes) next to his seat, with a young satyr looking over his shoulder. A winged female is slightly above Hercules and points to his son.

Other candidates for the deity, besides a crossdressing Dionysus, are a personification of Arcadia (no other ones are known, so this is real speculation), and Athena Alea.

From the Augusteum (basilica) of Herculaneum, circa 70 CE.
