Summary
[edit]DescriptionFreretRedCrossLine.jpg |
English: Red Cross relief center, Freret Street near Napoleon Avenue, Uptown New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina. This was one of several such stations set up by the Red Cross around the city starting in late September 2005; some continued through December.
Locals line up for daily give away of bottled water, food (mostly packaged ready to eat or self heating meals) and cleaning supplies (sponges, rubber gloves, soap, anti-mold cleaning liquid; some days other items such as brooms, mops, buckets were availible). This day they were also giving away plastic ice chests and bags of ice, an enthusiastically received treat in a city with few functioning refrigerators. At the desk under the tent locals could also sign up for medical care. This area of Uptown flooded in about chest deep water for over 2 weeks. |
