Title
Frenchman's Rock
Description

Note on the back of photo notes reads "Governor Tennyson and family at Franchman's Rock". It is believed that the people from left to right are a French Governess, Captain Chapman James Clare, Lionel, Harold, Aubrey, Hallam and Audrey in front. Based on information provided by Bridget Jolly and information from Alexandra Hasluck (Ed), 'Audrey Tennyson's Vice-Regal Days', the French governess was Mademoiselle Jose Dussau.

The inscription on the rock provides evidence of French Captain Nicolas Baudin's expedition in southern Australia. The English translation is 'EXPEDITION OF DISCOVERY BY COMMANDER BAUDIN ON THE GEOGRAPHE 1803'. Note that a '2' has been incorrectly chalked over the '3' in the date.
