Illus. in: Frank Leslie's illustrated newspaper, 1856 April 26, p. 341. KAN-KAI-MON -- The "Welcome Gate" to Shuri Castle in Okinawa. The Kingdom of Low-Chow. The Moniteur de la Flotte contains the following letter from Macao : The ships in Indo-China, under Rear-Admiral Guerin, lately visited the kingdom of Lieou-Tchieou, which includes all the archipelago between Japan on the north and China on the west. This State is ruled by a king, who resides at Choui, and is placed under tbe suzerainty of China and Japan. The Governments of Pekin and Jeddo both maintain an ambassador at tbe Court of the Prince. The archipelago of Lieou-Tchieou is formed of 37 islands; the largest, containing the capital, is 70 miles in length. Their soil is is generally fertile, and they possess several good harbours.
