French Hill in Yamate-cho, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: French Hill, or Mount France, is the location of the former French barracks and French consulate north of the current Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen (Harbor View Park) (港の見える丘公園 みなとのみえるおかこうえん), in Yamate, Naka-ku, Yokohama. [1] France sent Marines to Yokohama from 1863 to 1875 dispatching them to the hills of Yamate to protect its citizens, foreign settlements and harbors. When the barracks were no longer needed, the Marines transferred permanent tenure on the French hills to French diplomatic missions. The French consulate in Yokohama has proposed the construction of a consulate here. After the restoration of imperial rule in 1869 and the signing of the extraterritorial treaty, the marines withdrew in 1875 and the French Consulate was built on the same site in 1894, now known as 'French Hill'.The original consulate was destroyed in the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. Yokohama City acquired the French Hill area from France in 1971 and developed it as part of Minato-no-Mieru Oka Koen, and was finally opened to the public in 1972.
