Description

Coconino National Forest firefighters responded to a human-caused wildfire northeast of Fort Valley near Freidlein Prairie at approximately 7 a.m. June 19, 2017.

The fire was started by an abandoned campfire (shown in this photo) over Fathers' Day weekend. The Forest was under Stage I fire restrictions, and campfires in dispersed camping areas, like this one, were illegal.

The response included several engines, patrols, a hotshot crew and a tender water truck being dispatched to a fire burning in about a half-acre of forest land. The fire had burned an acre before forward progression was stopped. This was just one of 34 abandonded campfires discovered an extinguished over the weekend.

The fire produced thick smoke from heavy dead and down fuels which were piled in the area, and the smoke was visible to those in the Flagstaff area.

The Coconino National Forest implemented Stage I Fire Restrictions on June 15, 2017. There were 34 illegal campfires over the weekend. Fire personnel urge forest users to follow fire restrictions, and always fully extinguish their campfires—ensuring the campfire is out cold-to-touch. Having a campfire on the National Forest while under fire restrictions is a violation requiring a mandatory appearance in federal court, and up to six months jail time and a $5,000 fine.
