1,000 views on 15th December 2013 Although the Free North Church stands at a lower level than the Old High, its huge spire far exceeds the Old High in height. This Gothic church was designed by Alexander Ross and completed 1893. Seating capacity is 1,500, making it the largest church in Inverness; it also has the tallest steeple. The internal woodwork is a special feature. The church has recently been extensively renovated and redecorated in the original colours. www.scotlandschurchestrust.org.uk/church/inverness-free-n... The "bottom end" of Church Street in Inverness is a quieter part of the Town (City) Centre these days, and yet it contains some really old and beautiful buildings which really should attract more visitors. Grouped closely together between Church Street and Bank Street (River Ness) are the Dunbar Hospital, Old High Church and the Free North Church. At the top end of Church Lane is the Dunbar Hospital, alongside the lane (its graveyard running the length of the lane) is the Old High Church of Scotland, and at the foot of the lane facing the Greig Street footbridge over the River Ness is the Free North Church of the Free Church of Scotland. The last couple of days, while the sun shone (briefly each day!) I have had a wee opportunty to wander about with my camera and take some shots from different angles. |
