[edit]DescriptionFredericksburg - Battlefield with Sunken Road and Marye Heights.jpg |
English: Part of the site of the Battle of Fredericksburg, in December 1862. The Sunken Road crosses the middle of the photo, and Marye Heights is above it.
Some Civil War battlefields are hard to understand. The Battle of Fredericksburg is tragically easy to understand. The Union army, commanded by Gen. Ambrose Burnside, intended to cross the Rappahannock River at Fredericksburg, bypass or defeat the Confederate army, and move toward Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate capital. The Union army delayed, giving Gen. Robert E. Lee time to assemble the Confederate army at Fredericksburg. Nonetheless, Burnside ordered an attack up the hill on the Confederates. They were entrenched in the Sunken Road and other positions, and had a lot of artillery on Marye Heights. It was probably the most one-sided battle of the Civil War. The Union army had over 12,000 casualties. As far as I know, not one man reached the Confederate lines. |
