e quiet, delicate scale of the Funeral and the Tents of theNomads every one must take great pleasure. In the Waiting for the Caid and the Conversation,already cited, there is more depth and brilliancy, and great effectiveness. But at times Mr.Bridgman attempts things that might have puzzled a Fortuny, and attempts them, not as a boldimprovisators, but in the most studied and elaborate of ways. He gives, under the brightestlights, the most intense colors in the greatest variety, shunning no difficult juxtaposition, andneither lowering nor weakening the tone, as must be done in such cases by all but the mostinspired of colorists. Bits of such brilliant and tile-like coloring Gerdme uses on occasion, andwith not the best success; but Mr. Bridgman showed in this exhibition whole canvases made upof a mosaic of such colors.
