Description

Postcard of Hampton-on-Sea, Herne Bay, Kent, England, dated 1910, showing Edmund Reid, the police detective who investigated the Whitechapel murders. Reid is standing on the bridge that he and a neighbour built over Westbrook; the council promptly said it was unsafe, and demolished it. In the background is the Hampton Inn, on Hampton Pier Avenue.

Points of interest
  • The cliff edge fronting Hampton-on-Sea has not yet eroded as far back as it is today.
  • Reid has put on his best clothes for the photograph.
  • The bridge cannot have existed for more than a few days or weeks, so Palmer was possibly called in for the photograph almost immediately after it was built.
  • Next to the Hampton Inn, animals graze where now there are houses.
  • The hut at the end of the pub garden is probably the lavatory block.
  • The postcard may have once been tinted, but if so, the colour has almost completely faded.
