Der "freiwillige Landsturm zu Pferde" war Teil der 1823 gegründeten Frankfurter Stadtwehr. Sein Vorgänger war die bereits im 16. Jahrhundert bestehende Bürgerliche Reiterei, die u.a. den Geleitschutz bei Kaiserwahlen und während der Messezeiten stellte. 1813 nahm der Landsturm mit 72 Reitern an den Befreiungskriegen teil.
Die Mitglieder der Bürgerkavallerie brachten ihr eigenes Pferd und ihre eigene Uniform mit. Ihr Schöpfer und Kommandeur war der Bankier Simon Moritz von Bethmann. Der Stich zeigt ihn im Rang eines Obristwachtmeisters, umgeben von zwei Offizieren, im Hintergrund zwei Reiter. Das Korps der freiwilligen Frankfurter Kavallerie hatte eine Stärke von 200 Reitern.Licensing
