ADMIKAL DAVID D. PORTER. Admiral Porter, born in Chester, Delaware County, Pa., June 8th, 1813, entered the United States Navy as midshipman on February 2d, 1829 ,cruised in the Mediterranean, and then served on the Coast Survey until lie was promoted to lieutenant, February 27th, 1841. He was in theMediterranean and Brazilian waters until 1815, when he was appointed to the Naval Observatory in Washington ; and in 1816 he was sent by thegovernment on a secret mission to Ilayti, and reported on the condition of affairs there. He served during the entire Mexican War, had charge ofthe naval rendezvous in New Orleans, and was engaged, in every action on the coast, first as lieutenant, and afterward as commanding officer of theSpitfire. At the beginning of the Civil War he was ordered to command the steam frigate Powhatan, which was dispatched to join the GulfBlockading Squadron at Pensacola, and to aid in re-enforcing Fort Pickens.
