[edit]

Dr. Christian, Longtime Head of Reformatory, Dies. Dr. Frank L. Christian, retired superintendent of the Elmira Reformatory and international figure in the field of penology, died Tuesday night at the Arnot-Ogden Hospital in Elmira. He was 79 years old. Dr. Christian was head of the Reformatory for 22 years, retiring in 1939 after being severely beaten by two inmates in an escape attempt. He served, however, as consultant during World War II. He broke into prominence in 1929 when he was sent from Elmira by the then governor of New York Franklin D. Roosevelt, to take charge of Auburn Prison after a bloody riot, and brought order to that institution. His major interest, however, was the rehabilitation of youthful offenders. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss May Therry of New York, three sons and two daughters.

Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in the 28th year. If the copyright was not renewed the work is in the public domain. No renewal notice found for the Evening Times of Sayre, Pennsylvania for items published in the year 1955. For instance I can find a renewal notice for the New York Times for this year. If you find a renewal notice under a variation of the name of the publication, or a successor name of the publication, or any other evidence to the contrary, notify me and I will delete this.
