uge Deer, canforce themselves between the stems of the thickset evergieensaplings, among which a man can with difficulty work his wayonly by slow degrees, is in itself no easy matter to comprehend ;but when to size and weight is superadded the vast burthen ofponderous and spreading antlers, which they bear on theirheads—in a full grown bull Moose exceeding 50 lbs. weight—and which, one would imagine, must hopelessly entangle themin the brake, it is impossible to account for the ease and celeritywith which they will pass through the heaviest growth of forest.The hunter is compelled, therefore, to pursue—when he doespursue—both these giants of the cervine race on foot; and forthis reason hounds are rendered as unavailable as hoises; sincethe speed of the animal, when once alarmed, is so great, that itis very questionable whether even in open country, and withmounted hunters, it could be run down, or even run from scentinto view, by the fleetest Fox-hounds. The craft of the woodman, therefore, and an accurate know-ledge of the habits of his game, are the only aids on which thehunter can rely; but by these, and the aid of weather to boot,he will find little difficulty, beyond that fatigue and roughingwhich give its chiefest zest to life in the woods, in bringingthese an lered monarchs of the northern wilderness, within rangeof the uneiring rifle.
