78 MY HOLIDA V obscured by passing clouds and mists, wasshining on the Falls, and, as the horsestramped slowly over the bridge, suspendedseveral hundred feet above the dread waters,we came upon the scene quite unexpectedly :the sight was a stirring one, I assure you. Onthe bridge we could see the whole of the Fallsat once, looking down upon them from ourgreat height. The Falls looked at in this way, from amoving carriage suspended in the air, weresomewhat dwarfed in height; of course wecould get but a glimpse in passing in thenight. We expected to have been stunnedby the roar of the Falls, but our first surprisewas at the awful silence; we could hearnothing but the tramp of the horses and theroll of the wheels as our carriage movedslowly along—all else was silent as the grave.Notwithstanding the moonlight, it was notclear enough to distinguish motion in theFalls above us or in the water far down be-neath us.
