Look at St. Francisin the picture of the Jubilee and fix your attention on theseraphic monk who appears kneeling, arms extended, hishead raised, tears in his eyes, his mouth half-open,—andnotice the melancholy countenance, the forehead corru-gated by the amazement of the wonderful event, and youwill understand the shock to the saint, surprised by theheavenly apparition and the miracle of the thorns, withwhich he tore his skin, changed into roses—hoping by thisto merit the grace of the Jubilee. Finally see the Monkat Prayer, in the London Gallery, and marvel at the un-equalled conception of that work in which all the senti-ment of prayer is reflected in the darkened eyes, and inthe hands which closely hold a skull.
