Description

Grave of Francis Dubiel at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio, in the United States.

Dubiel (1860-1904) was born in Krakow, Poland. He studied at the University of Krakow before emigrating to the United States in 1881. He traveled the country extensively after his arrival, and studied to enter the ministry for two and a half years. Finally, in 1884, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the Cavalary before joining the 17th Infantry Regiment. He saw extensive service in the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War, where he served in Cuba and contracted malaria. He mustered out of the service on January 1, 1899. He returned to Columbus and opened a tailor's shop. He and 13 other men formed the American Veterans of Foreign Service on September 29, 1899. Dubiel died in 1904 from malaria.

In 1914, the American Veterans of Foreign Service changed its name to become the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
