Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Castle of Angers (per original Flickr page tags)

Prison and garrison from 16th to the 20th centuries.

All the buildings around the seigniorial courtyard of the Count's palace and those from the period of the Dukes of Anjou were still standing in the 16th century.

But at the beginning of the 16th century, the enclosure underwent substantial modifications to adapt it to advances in artillery, in particular the invention of the cannon: - the towers were levelled and their pepper pot turrets removed; - the narrow medieval loopholes were widened and turned into guns-loops; - the walls were reinforced, with a second wall being added on the town side and the space between the two filled in with earth and stone, and an embankment was added to the wall giving onto the countryside; - artillery platforms were added at the north-east and south-west corners; Note the North Tower which maintained its original height in places, and which was named after the windmill which stood on top of it in the 16th century.

In the modern period and up until the 19th century, the Chateau was used as a prison. It was also used to house soldiers (barracks were built in the courtyard) until it was opened to the public in 1947.
