Summary
[edit]DescriptionFraisthorpe Sands - geograph.org.uk - 845133.jpg |
English: Fraisthorpe Sands, Fraisthorpe, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Concrete gun turret on the beach near Sheep Walks, east of Fraisthorpe. The current (June 2008) Ordnance Survey 1:50000 scale map is misleading because coastal erosion has taken its toll on the cliff in this area, moving the high water mark at least 100 metres further west since this map was last updated. The 1:25000 scale map gives a rather more accurate version of the way things are now. Some of the land around Fraisthorpe and Barmston is barely above sea level and this area was thought extremely vulnerable to enemy attack during World War 2, and was heavily fortified as a result. Many major defensive installations have been destroyed by erosion and some pillboxes now close to the beach would once have been in supporting positions further inland. Some of the concrete was removed in the 1970s and local farmers complained that this increased the rate at which farmland was washed away by the sea. Two nearby settlements called Hartburn and Winkton were abandoned in around the 15th century and have long since been lost to coastal erosion. Fraisthorpe beach has been popular with naturists in more recent times, but the use of the beach for nude bathing is now the cause of a dispute between naturist groups and the county council. |
