Title
Fragments of Roman Samian ware
Description
English: Six fragments of Roman Samian ware, comprising three rims, one body sherd and one base sherd and one other miscellaneous body sherd. Five of the fragments conceivably belong to the same vessel, two fragments clearly join together. The break edges, though not absolutely fresh, appear to be clean, suggesting damage occurred fairly recently. The fabric is orange with the distinctive red slip of Samian ware. This suggests it is Central Gaulish ware. The rim fragments have a prominent bead rim and have vertical sides. This indicates that the vessel was probably a cylindrical bowl of Drag 30 form. These vessels were always decorated, and it is just possible to see the upper edge of some decoration, on two of the fragments. The fragments have a combined weight of 84.42g. Cylindrical bowls of this form date to the 2nd century. The sixth fragment is probably from a small bowl of Drag 27 form. The fabric is orange but slightly lighter than the other examples. It is probably south Gaulish. Manufacture of this type of small bowl ends in AD 150. The fragments weighs 2.68g.
