Title
Fragment of an Early Medieval Anglo Saxon Cruciform Brooch
Description
English: A fragment of a cast lead Early Medieval Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch. The fragment consists of part of the foot. Either side of which are lappets, originally in the form of eagle's heads. At the lower end of the fragment is a moulding representing the brow with ridges above the eyes on the foot. Behind the foot is the remains of the catchplate, which has been turned over, apparently for use. A feature of the brooch that cannot be understood is the material that fills the recessed lines on the face of this object. This is mid-green and purple in colour and seems soft. It has been suggested that the finder, who we can no longer contact, may have applied it. The length is 34.9mm, the width is 30.4mm, the thickness is 6.1mm and the weight is 32.88g.
