Title
Fragment of a cast lead insurance fire mark with an image of the sun as a human mask with radiating rays, probably dating from about AD 1700 to AD 1850. Front view.
Description
English: Fragment of a cast lead insurance fire mark with an image of the sun as a human mask with radiating rays, probably dating from about AD 1700 to AD 1850. Length of surviving part 143mm, width 78mm and 3mm thick. Weight 249.16g. Viewed from the front, the right hand side is an original curved edge. However, all other edges have been formed by subsequent cutting or shearing in order to utilise the lead sheet for another purpose, perhaps for patching. Around the edges are six holes ranging in size from 1mm to 5mm in diameter. These holes have been created by piercing from the front to the back as each hole has a burr mark around the edge of the hole at the back. In its original form the fire mark would have had an integral panel beneath the sun mask indicating the policy number.
