Title
Fragment of a Medieval Buckle Pin
Description
English: A fragment of a cast copper-alloy buckle pin, probably dating to the Medieval period, c. AD 1250-1450. The pin has an oval-shaped loop at one end, now broken, and a tapering, square-sectioned pin shaft, mostly missing. Between the shaft and loop are two small raised ridges for decoration. No further decoration is visible. Most of the pin is missing below the decorative ridges, including the majority of the pin shaft; the buckle frame itself is missing.

Similar buckle pins are discussed in Egan and Pritchard 1991, p115, Nos. 540-543, dating to between c. 1270-c. 1400 AD based upon contextual ceramic evidence. Cf. also Whitehead 2003, p17, dated to c. 1250-1450. The date suggested above reflects both publications. The pin measures 25.9 mm long; 4.64 mm wide at loop; 10.8 mm thick at loop; weighing 3.56 grams. It has an even dark green patina with lighter corrosion at the broken pin-end.
