Description
English: Fragment of Samien ware dating to the Roman period (45-410AD). The fragment is from the centre of the base of a vessel. It is sub-circular in plan and D-shaped in profile. The fabric is very hard is light orange in colour and has an orange/red 'satin' gloss slip on both the inner and outer surface. The base is stamped with the inscription [C]OMPRINNIM which is the stamp of the potter Comprinnvs. The fragment was produced in Lezoux. In “Roman Samian Pottery in Britain”, Paul Webster (1996) notes that red-slip coated samian ware, made mainly in Gaul and Germany, was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to the mid 3rd centuries.
