Title
Fragment of Samian Vessel
Description
English: A fragment of a Samian ware vessel dating to the Roman period, c. AD 40 to AD 230.

The object is a fragment of the body of a Samian ware bowl. There is evidence for the pressed decoration on the outer surface with a raised, semi-circular design and a rope like design. The slip remains on the decorated areas although there is some damage on this side of the sherd. More of the slip remains in place on the inside face of the vessel fragment and there is a groove running across the fragment.

Tim Padley of Tullie House Museum, Carlisle suggests that this fragment is likely to be part of a Dragendorff 30 bowl which was large, cylindrical and ornately decorated.
