Title
Fragment of Roman nail cleaner
Description
English: Fragment of copper alloy Roman nail cleaner of Crummy type 3. This object represents the truncated top portion of the nail cleaner. It is now roughly semicircular in plan and flat in section. It would once have been leaf shaped in plan, but has been broken with an even, horizontal break approximately halfway along its length. Extending from the curved end is an integral, transverse loop set on a fairly long neck, and pierced with a circular hole. When complete, the leaf shaped body of the nail cleaner would have tapered into a rectangular shaft. The object has a surviving length of 25.9mm, of which 11.12mm is the loop. It is 12.02mm wide, 0.96mm thick and weighs 1.29g. It has an even dark green patina with slight yellow mottling. The break edge is worn smooth suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. A very similar, complete, parallel can be seen in See Crummy 1983, Figure 62, number 1874. This would give it a date from the mid to late 3rd century.
