Title |
Fragment of Bronze Age Palstave - side 2 |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of cast copper-alloy palstave of probable middle Bronze Age date. Fragment consists of the blade, which is crescentic in form and slightly upturned at the edges, and the lower part of the main body. On both sides of the object, just above the blade, are two small sub-oval indentations. The purpose of these is unclear, although it is likely that they were decorative. The lower part of the stop ridge is visible on both sides and is unusually close to the blade itself, suggesting that the piece was originally of a squat nature. This theory is confirmed by examination of the sides, which radiate out at a wide angle from the blade, creating a thick body (see photo). A ridge which extends down the side of the palstave also indicates that it was made in a two piece mould.
The piece measures 39.4mm high, by 41.5mm wide at the widest point of the blade and 22.7mm wide at the narrowest. It is up to 22.8mm thick. Weight = 92.17g. |
