the North Platte over the Oregon Trail.On the third day about the time for camping, the usualmonotony of travel on the plains was suddenly broken bythe alarm of Indians! There was much immediateconfusion and preparations were made for defence; but, ina few moments, the enemy were discovered to be a returningparty of trappers and traders under the leadership of thefamous mountaineer Jim Bridger. The day being so nearlyspent the new comers turned back on the trail with theFremont party and all encamped together. Bridger tooksupper with the Fremont men, and during the course ofit, related some recent experiences that very much disturbedtheir serenity. In the first place the Sioux had been growing more hostileand with bands of Cheyennes and Gros Ventres, were out onthe war-path which at present was the Oregon Trail fartherwestward particularly at a point called Red Buttes, in thevery path indeed, of this Fremont expedition. A Bad Scare 69 had, the previous year, August, 1841, a fierce encounter withthe Indians. The battle took place at or near Fraebs Post,to the south-westward of Fort Laramie about 150 miles, onthe headwaters of Yampa River, on St. Vrains Fork, near theElk Head Mountains (approximately lat. 40° 45, long. 107°30) and the leader of the party of sixty men, Henry Fraeb,was killed, as well as four of his companions.^ They hadin turn killed ten of the Sioux. Bridger had avoided RedButtes by cutting across to the south of them through theLaramie Mountains, then called the Black Hills, but theFremont expedition in executing their orders would neces-sarily march exactly past the place and the company wasexcited by the prospect of falling into an Indian fight.Preuss was disgusted with their attitude and remarks:I expected to find every one prepared for occurrences of thisnature; but to my great surprise I found on the contrarythat this news had thrown them all into the greatest con-sternation, a
