y reached in the early part of 1743. It is probablethat they went as far as the Wind River range. In 1739two other Frenchmen went up the South Platte for a longdistance, so the French, by right of exploration, had a stronghold on all the Mississippi Valley. A half century later, 1793, Mackenzie succeeded incrossing the continent by way of Peace River Pass andarrived on the shore of the Pacific not far from QueenCharlotte Sound. ^ This was the first known crossing of thecontinent by white men except the far southern journey ofCabeza de Vaca and his three companions, from some pointon the Texas coast to the west coast of Mexico. Church of San Miguel, Santa Fe, New Mexico As it was before the hurricane of 1872. The tower is now lacking. One of the oldest structures in the United States. Said to have been built in 1582 ; rebuilt, 1710. Santa Fe was founded 1605 River of the West 31 after a mention of it in Jonathan Carvers book, ^ flowing tothe western sea, figured on maps at least as early as 1753,though the place of its exit to the ocean could not be deter-mined. Heceta, a Spanish navigator, found a bay in 1775in latitude 46° 9, with a strong current, and eddies, whichled him to surmise that there was a large river or a straitat the place. As he failed to settle the problem he cannotbe said to have discovered the Columbia. Other experi-enced navigators, like Vancouver and Meares, passed alongthe coast and declared that there were breakers all the way,which was true, for the Columbia presents a wide, dangerousbar, with a line of surf, hazardous to-day after thousandsof dollars have been spent on improving the
