Summary
[edit]DescriptionFox Theatre, Grand Boulevard, Grand Center, St. Louis, MO - 53237369224.jpg |
English: Built in 1929, this Siamese Byzantine Revival-style building was designed by C. Howard Crane for the Fox Theatre Chain. The building features a cream-colored terra cotta front facade along Grand Boulevard, with buff brick cladding on the sides and rear, as well as the exterior of the auditorium. The facade features intricate reliefs, pinnacles, a front gable parapet, niches at the corners of the lobby facade, a large window at the exterior of the lobby with a complex arch, a first floor entrance with a ticket booth and multiple poster cases, a large marquee with golden sculptures over the front entrance, and a large decorative blade sign mounted to the front facade. To the south, a shorter two-story retail wing stands in front of the auditorium, built to maximize the economic output of the property, which features three storefronts on the first floor and three large windows on the second floor, a metal canopy, banded reliefs at the second floor, and a side gable roof. The exterior of the sides of the lobby feature decorative brickwork and a terra cotta cornice, while the exterior of the auditorium features a metal fire escape mounted to the facade, and red brick on the lower portion of the facade facing Washington Avenue. A secondary entrance from Washington Avenue features similar intricate reliefs to those found on the principal facade along Grand Boulevard, but on a smaller scale. The building was listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and is a contributing structure in the Midtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The theater presently serves as a Performing Arts Center, and an anchor in the Grand Center theater and arts district. |
