about 1800 men, the second brigade 700, and inthe two other regiments, Chenaults brigade, 2000. Thisincluded the artillery. There were about 200 un-armed men, all mounted. These had been recently ex-changed as prisoners; a/rms had not been provided forthem. We expected to capture arms for them from theenemy. They were not so useless as it might appear,at first thought, as they were detailed to hold horses dur-ing the battle. The division now included the Quirksscouts. General Morgans report of his strength to thecommander was 3900 men. At this time my friend,St. Leger Grenfels. severed his connection with this com-mand, having accepted the appointment of Inspector-General of the cavalry of the western army. His saddle,bridle and buff overcoat were captured at the battle ofHartsville, and were returned to him. It had been cap-tured by a noted Home Guard, Captain King, severalmonths before, from our man Lightning, Morgans tele-graph operator. St. Leger was overjoyed at recovering ^:^m^:

He served with the western army tothe close of the struggle, was captured, and with a num-ber of other prisoners, who were charged with some spe-cial crimes, doubtless falsely, as many others had been atthis period, was sent to the barren, sandy island of DryTortugas, off the coast of Florida. He tried to escape in a small open boat at night dur-ing a storm at sea; this craft was washed ashore by thetides. No one has ever heard or seen him since; his fate,therefore, remains a mystery. He certainly was one ofthe most unique and interesting characters that our civilstrife floated to the surface. Peace to his memory, souland ashes. Amen. There now comes to us a young man of fine execu-tive ability, James Magginiss of New York state. Hewas made adjutant-general to the command, after St.Leger Grenfels resigned this office. This young soldierwas killed six months later in a battle at Gordons Mills,Tenn. He died doing his duty as a soldier, and
