Title
Four Views of Cleveland: From the Court House Looking West
Description
Whelpley was a view artist and surveyor, active in Cleveland during the mid-1830s. This work is one of a group of four panoramic views engraved by Milo Osborn[e] in New York in 1834. Another edition (lithographs) was produced in Cleveland by Sanford and Hayward. Library caption from old frame: This shows the west side of the Public Square with the three story building, being the original Hotel Cleveland. The building at the left was the first armory of the Cleveland Grays in Cleveland, and later was Cleveland's first street car barn. Note that the Public Square was simply a series of cow paths in those days. The prints, damaged from being adhered to wooden boards, were treated at Northeast Document Conservation Center in 1978 and at the Intermuseum Conservation Association in 2006.
