Description

At the Fountain Hills Art Fair today I discovered a vendor featuring the famous Four Peaks Amethyst gemstone - world-famous for it's special color and quality. The outdoor art fair in Fountain Hills was a great delight to see today and discovering this particular vendor was a treat for a special reason.

5 years ago I spent the day traipsing around central Arizona near Wickenburg with a miner named Ed Davis. He was one of the miners of the famous Four Peaks mine in the Superstition Mountains east and south of Phoenix. While we did not go to the famous mine where this deep purple and red amethyst is mined, we did go to the Purple Passion Mine where I got to dig around for rock specimens from daybreak to the middle of the night. It was one of the best days in my life. Ed gave me a tiny faceted Four Peaks amethyst that night and I've waited a long time to decide what to do with it. I'd heard that for a while these famous gems were not being sold in America, and here I find the new "official" dealer for it, at the art fair today. Here are some links that tell the story of the mine and the gemstone, and links to photos and store details.

Oh, and about this design? It's a pendant not much larger than a quarter. It features the Four Peaks in the background, the Fountain Hills landmark fountain, saguaros and a mounted amethyst.
