Summary

[edit]
Description

Four-man battle trench Type A using GCI (corrugated iron) sheets (from Military Engineering, Volume II, Field Engineering, Pamphlet No. 2, Field Defences, Appendix 4 to Annex K)

This type of trench, designed to accommodate 4 men (half section) is constructed using corrugated iron sheet and metal pickets as revetment. It has two 1.5m long firing bays (each for 2 men) and two 2.3m long shelter bays, being only 75cm in width throughout. Each shelter bay is covered with a CGI roof and 45cm of sand bags (4 layers) for overhead protection against shrapnel.

============

The airbase at RAF Mount Pleasant was announced in 1983 and subsequently opened in 1985 primarily as a fighter airbase on the Falkland Islands. Following the conflict in 1982 a small airbase was located at the only existing hard runway on the islands 27 miles wast at Port Stanley (RAF Stanley).

As part of this military installation in what was a recent conflict zone, it was necessary to construct a number of field defences to ensure the security and protection of the airbase. It is likely these were constructed in the early days of the construction of the airfield and formed part of the defensive plan. The examples I have selected to record are beyond the current perimeter of the airbase and located immediately beside the civilian road. They all appear in a poor state of repair and I have assumed they are no longer maintained. They likely still form part of the outer line of field defences.
