ers had no time to answer. Because this top Mammal branch is so large, I toldyou that I would make a tree of it all by itself. Hereit is : now you can see how man and his blood brothersare related. So saying, the Doctor unrolled a longsheet of paper and fastened it to a door, where thefirelight shone brightly on it. This tree has several more branches when it growsin warmer countries. You can see where they belong:two very low down by the trunk, and one up near thetop where the Monkeys live. This winter you mustbe content to stmty the tree as it grows north of theGulf of Mexico and the Rio Grande, up to the land ofsnow and the northern lights. Nat, go to the wonderroom and bring me the map of North America thathangs there. We will hang it on one side of theanimal tree. You see that the Rio Grande is the river thatbounds the United States on the southwest, and the fewbranches that are cut from our tree belong to the tropi-cal animals that only stray north of this river by mereaccident.

Then how does anybody know about them ?asked Rap. By reading in books, I suppose. These animals had passed away before there wereany books, and before man, as we know him, was livingon the earth; so all we can know about them must belearned from the skeletons that are found buried be-neath the earth
