Root-stocks of this sort oftenextend horizontally forlong distances in the caseof grasses like the sea ryegrass (Plate I), which rootsitself firmly and thrives inshifting sand-dunes. Inthe stouter rootstocks, likethat of the iris (Fig. 44)and the Caladium (Fig.45), this stem-like charac-ter is less evident. Thepotato is an excellent ex-ample of the shoit andmuch-thickened under-ground stem known as atuber.
