English: This foundation stone was laid by ALfred F. Buxton Esq. June 17th 1904.
F. Danby Smith ARIBA Architect, W. Gregar & Son Builders. Alfred Fowell Buxton b 1854 was later Chairman of the London County Council 1916-1917. Francis Danby Smith is the architect of the praised Shoreditch Heath Centre (1920-22) in Kingsland Road, in the words of Pevsner, a pioneering mother and child clinic. Perhaps ths same person as "T. Danby-Smith" to which QUeen Mary's House, ampstead, a miitary maternity home, is ascribed. Alfred Buxton married Violet Jex-Blake whose father was headmaster of Rugby School and he was an Alderman of London from 1904 to 1922. he died in 1952 aged 98. |
