Summary
[edit]DescriptionFoulridge Tunnel, south portal, Leeds and Liverpool Canal - geograph.org.uk - 1633045.jpg |
English: Foulridge Tunnel, south portal: Leeds & Liverpool Canal The 1640-yard Foulridge Tunnel is the most important engineering work on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. It was opened to traffic on 1 May 1796 having taken almost four years to complete. There is no towpath, so until the advent of motorised boats, all boats had to be 'legged' through, while the horse walked over the top. Originally an hour was allowed for legging through, but this had to be increased to an hour and a half.
The building seen at the left is of some historic importance, as it was used by professional leggers while waiting for the next boat. |
