right to lead aKing m plain sttits. The face value of the smallcards is indifferent. Any card below a ten is simplya small card. Now, instead of committing these ten combina-tions to memory, let us examine them, and see if wecannot find some chara<5leristic which is common toall of them; so that by recalling that one charac-teristic we shall be able to remember all the tencombinations, and therefore all the King leads. If we examine them attentively we shall see thatin every instance the King is accompanied by thecard next to it in value; the Ace or the Queen;sometimes by both of them. After sorting them, seeif you have the King in any of the suits, andask yourself, shall I lead it? This practice will train the eye to detect aKing lead at sight, and will relieve you from thenecessity of keeping the table waiting while youcudgel your brains to recall what it was that thebook said. The book you have read has nothingto do with the game )ou are playing. The cardsare held in the hand, the eye falls upon t
