Pyritized shell fossil from the Irish midlands

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrograph, reveals a snapshot of past life recorded in oolitic limestone rocks, from the Irish Lower Carboniferous. This fossil shell (centre of image) has been preserved due to replacement by pyrite (dark grey). This shell shows small zonations indicating the influence of hot metal-bearing fluids. These fluids are the same ones that ultimately led to massive base metal deposits forming in Ireland, such as the Lisheen mine, Ireland's second largest base metal deposit, and the source of this sample. Image taken at University College Dublin during research at iCRAG and UCD. Scale included.
