Summary

[edit]
Description
English: (outdoor public display, Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park, Nebraska, USA)

Limestone is the # 3 most common sedimentary rock in the world. It is composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) - usually calcite, but sometimes aragonite. Most limestones were deposited in ancient warm, shallow ocean environments. Many examples have a mix of whole fossils, fragmented fossils, and fine-grained mud - such samples are called fossiliferous limestone. Seen here is Cretaceous-aged fossiliferous limestone from the American Great Plains. The fossils are inoceramid bivalve shells that lived in the ancient Western Interior Seaway, which existed when global sea levels were fairly high.
