Summary
[edit]DescriptionFossiliferous ferruginous sandstone (Lower Mississippian; Rt. 35 roadcut, northeast of Rittenours, Ohio, USA) 1 (27067791928).jpg |
Brachiopod fossils in ferruginous sandstone in the Mississippian of Ohio, USA. The fossils in this rock are Rhipidomella brachiopod shells, preserved as iron oxide-stained internal molds (click on the photo to zoom in and look around). Brachiopods are a group of sessile, benthic, filter-feeding, marine invertebrates. They first appear in Cambrian rocks and were abundant in Earth's oceans throughout the Paleozoic. They were also common in Mesozoic oceans, but are scarce in modern oceanic biotas. Brachiopods have two shells, called valves, that are usually calcareous (made of calcite - CaCO3 - calcium carbonate). Each shell of a brachiopod is bilaterally symmetrical, unlike each shell of a bivalve (clam). Prima facie, the rock looks like an ironstone, but it's more likely a ferruginous sandstone (I didn't keep the sample - my rock collection is too sizable already). Classification: Animalia, Brachiopoda, Articulata (a.k.a. Rhynchonelliformea), Orthida, Rhipidomellidae Stratigraphy: float from the Cuyahoga Formation (or possibly the lower Logan Formation), Lower Mississippian Locality: Rittenours Outcrop - large roadcut on the northeastern side of Route 35, northeast of the town of Rittenours, Jefferson Township, southeastern Ross County, southern Ohio, USA (39° 13’ 46.29” North latitude, 82° 49’ 57.15” West longitude) |
