completed by the cablecompanys staff, and communication was restored. A Scotchman by the name of Greg once owned Fanningand Washington Islands, the latter sixty-five miles to thenorthwest. Greg married a native princess, a sister of theKing of Rakahanhaga, near Manihiki, by whom he had eightchildren, all of whom he had educated at good schools. Practically, the only product of these islands is the cocoa-nut. There is an immense lagoon there infested with sharks;so much so, that an area of the water has to be enclosed withbarbed wire to enable the few residents to have salt waterbaths. In 1907, Fanning and Washington Islands came into thepossession of a missionary—Father Rougier—who had loanedmoney on them. It was there that the Church and the Lawmet in conflict, with the Church triumphant. A well-knownsolicitor in Fiji, since deceased, thought he was getting a halfinterest in the property, but as he had put in no money themissionary would not entertain his claim. The islands were

OTHER ISLANDS 95 sold under foreclosure at Suva, Fiji, on November 30, 1907,for the sum of 25,000 pounds. The missionary. Father Rougier, subsequently sold Fan-ning and Washington Islands for 70,000 pounds. A Britishprotectorate had been established over the islands, and theHigh Commissioner of the Western Pacific made an orderprohibiting the sale to any one other than a British subject,and I believe it is now owned by a British syndicate. The white population of Fanning Island consists of sometwenty persons, mostly employed at the cable station, andabout two hundred natives recruited from the Gilbert Islandsfor the cocoanut plantations. In the vicinity of Fanning are the Washington, Christmasand Palmyra Islands, annexed by the British about 1889, al-though the latter was discovered by Captain Sawle of theAmerican ship, Palmyra, in 1802.
