A circundar o castelo, a cintura de muralhas da Fortificação Baluarte de Campo Maior é, hoje, testemunho da evolução das necessidades defensivas na zona fronteiriça. Ampliada nos reinados de D. João II e D. Manuel I e, posteriormente, durante a Guerra da Restauração, por motivos militares e devido ao crescimento populacional, a fortificação foi recentemente alvo de um processo de recuperação que lhe devolveu a dignidade e a grandeza de outros tempos. A intervenção recuperou 1600 metros de muro e teve a particularidade de utilizar técnicas e métodos tradicionais. Os visitantes podem passear pela fortificação de Campo Maior e conhecer o Bastião do Curral dos Coelhos, o Bastião de Lisboa, o Bastião de S. Sebastião e o Bastião da Boavista. O baluarte de Santa Cruz, também recuperado, não se encontra disponível para visita, mas pode ser visto a partir do já mencionado Meio-Bastião do Curral dos Coelhos, bem como a zona onde se situava a vala de água da fortificação, actualmente ocupada por um conjunto muito cuidado de hortas privadas. Ao longo de todo o percurso existe sinalização com informação sobre a fortificação, o que constitui um excelente apoio para os visitantes que pretendem conhecer mais sobre este fantástico local histórico. <a href="https://campomaior.pt/en/bastioned-fortification/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">campomaior.pt/en/bastioned-fortification/</a> |
